"Looking Toward Grand River" From Chap. 35, Mich. Terr., 1826
In
late November 1826 I wrote the following in my journal:
We
now look toward Grand River and we do it with dread. Wagons have never
gone that way before, and the narrow path we have to travel is hidden
under six inches of snow. No food will be available for our horses on
the hundred-mile journey, probably none for ourselves, except what we
carry with us. Baby Isaac has been for more than a month severely afflicted
with sickness. All things considered, we really fear to set out, but
the Ottawas are expecting us and must not be disappointed.
